Mastering Haze: Farzad’s Nifty Technique for Controlling Artificial Lights

Back in March, Farzad of Nimkat Studio based in Tehran reached out to me with something intriguing. He mentioned an efficient technique to eliminate haze and crazy highlights in interior photography. And just last week, he finally shared the video with me. Wow, it is a nifty technique that the whole community needs to know about.

In his method, which he has called “Selective Exposure”, Farzad flicks the light on and off real quick, basically he is using the light fixtures as strobes. Cool, right? It might take some experimentation to nail down, but I believe that the post-production benefits might be worth a try! You can easily blend the right exposure (without a complex luminosity mask!) and say goodbye to color cast caused by artificial lights.

This is one of the most interesting hacks I’ve seen in a while, and I can’t wait to try it out. Thank you, Farzad for sharing and creating this video tutorial. Let us know if what you think about the technique in the comments below.

I lead a double life as an architect and architectural photographer based in Mexico City, a metropolis full of contrast. I'm interested in proportion systems, asymmetry and maps.
