Waiting For The Perfect Moment With Nate Sheets
We’re back on the blog with one of my favorite photographers out of Kansas City! Nate Sheets is taking us to Native Ridge, a project shot for Herron + Partners and Kali Buchanan Interior Design.
Nate kicks off, “[Native Ridge is] located about 45 minutes from the Kansas City metro. The first thing I noticed about this project was how much space this house has around it. I love it when this happens because you can search for compositions far away and place the architecture in nature.”
He explains, “The homeowner’s family was adorable so we used them for some exterior photos to add some life and scale.”
And goes on, “This house gave me some great shadows to work with. My goal was to balance compositions to show how light interacts with the design. The roof plane apertures provided beautiful shadows across the stone which provided great opportunities. Shooting this project was all about being patient and waiting for that perfect moment.”
Nate breaks down the making of this next photo, sharing “My pants and shoes were soaked from hiking into the grass from morning dew. I had to have this shot set up before the sun rose to catch the first light. The sun rose almost directly behind me so I needed to catch it right away or it would be super hot on the house. We also had to rush and squeegee the windows from the moisture before it was time to shoot. The shot itself was rather simple it was more about being in the right place at the right time.”
He speaks about the next photo and says “We had several shots planned for the evening, both interiors and exteriors. What I like about this one is that this composition wasn’t planned. The light that beamed down the stairs and through the kitchen windows filled in negative space beautifully. I also liked anchoring the kitchen to the entry this way. I feel this composition would fall flat if we didn’t have the sun shining through.”
As always, Nate’s interior images are just lovely. They are shape harnessing and filled with gorgeous patterns of light.
Nate’s scenes are always just right in terms of exposure and tonality. They feel true to life and his processing is restrained.
Simple styling and carefully executed compositions tell the story of the architecture and design nicely.
While larger, more all-encompassing compositions tie the spaces together for us.
I always love how Nate crafts quiet yet character-filled moments in his photography. The images are equal parts interesting and tranquil!
Again, calm and peaceful, yet filled with stunning light and just enough drama!
“This is my favorite shot of the set,” Nate explains. “I’ve always loved when a house feels placed in the woods glowing at night.
I don’t get too many opportunities to compose a photo showing that. I wanted to make sure trees were in front of the home to tell that story and shoot after dusk so we have a strong contrast between the trees and the home.”
Many thanks Nate! We always love having you on APA!
