Hall+Merrick+McCaugherty Shows Off the Acclaimed Twin Gables Home by Wheeler Kearns

Imbued in gorgeous light, a sense of time and place, and the storied photography studio’s understanding of architecture and design, it is easy to fall in love with the work of Kendall McCaugherty – principal photographer at Hall+Merrick+McCaugherty.

Today, we’re taking a look at Kendall’s photographs of Two Gables by Wheeler Kearns Architects. Already sporting quite a few awards and accolades – like the 2024 Luxe RED Awards Regional Exterior Architecture Winner, 2023 LaCantina Competition Best Suburban Residential Project, 2023 Fay Jones School Alumni Design Citation Award (Alumni Laura Cochran) – the project is currently a finalist in the single-family category of the AIA Chicago’s Learch Bates People’s Choice Awards.

Two Gables is a contemporary single-family home comprising two twin-gabled volumes centered around “the heart of the home” – a coffee house. The large and ample glazings drench the spaces in light and landscape from the surrounding 1-acre wooded ravine site.

Kendall immerses us in the environment, translating what it feels like to be at Two Gables.

I appreciate how she breaks the house down into smaller chunks so that our attention can rest on the forms and materiality. However, Kendall leaves in a smidge of the structure that hints at its full scale and leaves us wanting to see what’s just outside the frame.

The same level of care and craftsmanship is shown to the accessory structures and areas at Two Gables, just as with the primary space and hero shots.

Inside, Kendall’s compositions harness the plentiful leading lines and bold shapes present. The photographs feel graphic and fun.

Well-timed lighting adds to the playfulness by creating sharp shadows and highlights, heightening that geometric feel.

Quieter moments communicate the peaceful nature of the property and how it feels like a retreat. Kendall does a beautiful job emphasizing all of the windows present in the home, and the way they act as portals bringing the outdoors, in.

We’ll wrap things up with this stunning shapely picture! The lines! Incredible!
