How To Register Your Copyright in the United States

Coming off the heels of our recent article sharing Andrew Keithly’s excel macro to help speed up the process of filling out your copyright registration form, I thought it would be prudent to share another video with a more comprehensive breakdown detailing the process of copyright registration (in the US) – a start-to-finish explanation beginning with image prep all the way through the registration process. 

Atlanta-based architectural photographer, Garey Gomez, shares his process for optimizing the copyright registration process to be as quick and painless as possible.  He begins with how he organizes his Lightroom catalogue including sharing his folder structure and export settings, and takes you all the way through the online registration process with the U.S. Copyright Office.

While we own the copyright to our images the moment they are taken, we need to register those images in order to maximize the potential benefits from an infringement case.  It is often perceived as a tedious process and a lot of us tend to put it off.  Hopefully Garey’s video coupled with the excel trickery from Andrew’s earlier post will help ensure you stay on top of this – every three months ideally!
